Most people get bad output from AI tools for one reason: they ask vague questions and expect specific answers.

"Help me with my code" and "write me a caption" are requests, not prompts. A prompt is a request plus the context, constraints, and format that let the model actually do the job well. The model isn't withholding a better answer — it doesn't have enough to work with, so it gives you the average of everything it's seen, which is exactly what a generic answer is.

The four-part anatomy

Every good prompt below is built from the same four parts. Once you can see them, you can fix any prompt that isn't working by asking which part is missing.

  1. Context — what's actually going on: your situation, your level, your constraints. This is the part people skip, and it's the part that does the most work.
  2. Task — the specific thing you want done, not the general area. "Review this" is an area. "Flag anything that'll bite me in 6 months" is a task.
  3. Constraints — what to prioritize, avoid, or rank by. Without these the model optimises for sounding helpful, which is not the same as being useful.
  4. Format — how you want the answer shaped, so you're not editing structure after the fact.

You'll see that pattern repeat 100 times below. The repetition is the point: once you've internalised the shape, you stop needing a list like this at all.

How to use this page: every prompt is copy-paste ready. Swap anything in [brackets] for your real situation. Each entry is tagged for who it's built for — professionals, students, or both — and carries one line on why it works, not just what it does. Read those lines. They're the actual lesson; the prompts are just the delivery mechanism.

Treat the model like a senior collaborator you're handing context to, not an autocomplete engine. The quality gap between "fix this" and a well-scoped prompt is enormous, and it's almost entirely about how much real context you hand over up front.
